混天绫 (Huntian Ling)

The Huntian Ling (混天绫) is one of Nezha’s most iconic magical treasures. Described as a crimson silk ribbon approximately one chi wide and seven chi long, it was bestowed upon Nezha by his master, Taiyi Zhenren, shortly after his birth. In its resting state, the ribbon appears soft and elegant, often draped around Nezha’s body as both an ornament and a symbol of divine status.

Despite its delicate appearance, the Huntian Ling possesses immense supernatural power. It can extend indefinitely, bind opponents automatically, and withstand tremendous force without breaking. In battle, it functions as both a restraining weapon and a manifestation of Nezha’s divine authority.

Its name literally means “Ribbon that Mixes the Heavens,” reflecting its legendary ability to disturb the natural order of the cosmos. According to Fengshen Yanyi (Investiture of the Gods), Nezha once used the Huntian Ling while bathing in the Jiuwan Stream, causing violent disturbances that shook the underwater palace of the Dragon King of the East Sea. The resulting turmoil set in motion the famous conflict between Nezha and Ao Bing (敖丙), the Dragon King’s third son.

In art, literature, and popular culture, the flowing red Huntian Ling is often depicted swirling around Nezha’s body. Together with the Qiankun Quan (乾坤圈), Wind Fire Wheels (风火轮), and Fire-Tipped Spear (火尖枪), it has become one of the most recognizable visual symbols associated with the deity.
