Ao Guang

敖广

Ao Guang is the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea, ruler of an underwater palace and its aquatic subjects across Chinese literary tradition. In Investiture of the Gods, Nezha’s disturbance of the sea leads to the death of Ao Guang’s son Ao Bing. Ao Guang goes to Chentang Pass and then seeks judgment in Heaven, escalating the conflict between the dragon court and Li Jing’s family.

In Journey to the West, Sun Wukong enters the Eastern Sea palace demanding a weapon. Ao Guang offers several arms, but the monkey finally takes the sea-calming iron pillar that becomes the Ruyi Jingu Bang and demands armor from the other Dragon Kings. Ao Guang later receives Wukong more cautiously and joins his brothers when rain, rivers, or aquatic monsters involve the dragon courts.

Crown, dragon robe, water palace, and the ability to assume dragon form mark him as a sovereign rather than a conventional field general. His two best-known relationships—with Ao Bing and Nezha, and with Wukong and the staff—show how authority over the sea repeatedly draws him into conflicts he cannot fully control.
