Queen Mother

王母娘娘

The Queen Mother is the high celestial matriarch who presides over the Peach Garden and Peach Banquet in Journey to the West. Three grades of immortal peaches ripen over thousands of years and confer long life or divine transformation. When the festival approaches, she sends seven celestial maidens to gather the fruit and prepares a courtly feast for the highest gods, making orchard, attendants, vessels, music, and guest order expressions of her authority.

Sun Wukong has already been appointed keeper of the garden and secretly eats the ripest peaches. From the maidens he learns that the Great Sage Equal to Heaven is not on the banquet list. He immobilizes them, enters the feast before the guests arrive, drinks the immortal wine, eats the delicacies, and wanders into Laozi’s palace to consume the elixir pills. The Queen Mother’s celebration therefore becomes the hinge between Wukong’s wounded pride and the full Havoc in Heaven, even though she never needs to fight him with a weapon.

Later heavenly episodes continue to treat her as a source of rank, rare gifts, and information within the celestial court. Her defining surroundings are the jade terrace, richly dressed maidens, baskets of peaches, banquet vessels, and ordered ranks of guests. Dignified robes and a commanding seated posture fit her better than invented armor. The power she exercises is ceremonial but consequential: one invitation list and one orchard set the most famous rebellion in Heaven into motion.
