Three Calamities

三灾

The Three Calamities are the recurring thunder, fire, and wind trials that threaten practitioners who have gained longevity in Journey to the West. They explain why learning to live long does not end the work of cultivation.

In chapter 2, Patriarch Subhuti tells Wukong that an extraordinary path violates ordinary cosmic limits. Thunder comes after five hundred years; later an inner yin fire and a destructive wind attack the body. He therefore teaches transformations as ways to evade these ordeals.

The system connects longevity, risk, and technique. These are not three combat spells owned by an enemy. They are periodic consequences of pursuing transcendence, and their lesson gives Wukong’s famous transformations a purpose deeper than disguise or spectacle.
