Human Seed Bag

人种袋

The Human Seed Bag is the powerful capturing treasure used by Yellow Brows in Journey to the West. Its true owner is Maitreya, who explains that its proper name is the Acquired Bag and its common name is the Human Seed Bag. Yellow Brows steals it while Maitreya is away and descends to impersonate the Buddha.

An Ordinary Cloth Bag

The treasure is striking because it does not look ornate. Sun Wukong and his companions see only a white cloth shoulder bag. Yet once Yellow Brows throws it into the air, it can draw in a large crowd of enemies.

Unlike splendid treasures, its plain appearance creates the point of contrast: the more ordinary it looks, the more astonishing its force becomes.

A Whole Host of Gods in One Bag

Yellow Brows captures far more than the pilgrims. Sun Wukong repeatedly asks divine forces for help. The Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions, the Five Directional Guardians, the Tortoise and Snake Generals and Five Divine Dragons sent by Zhenwu, and later the Little Zhang Prince with four divine generals are all taken into the bag.

This ordinary-looking sack can swallow an entire body of divine warriors at once.

Sun Wukong Escapes Repeatedly

Sun Wukong survives because he has already seen the bag. Each time Yellow Brows prepares to throw it, he immediately escapes on his somersault cloud. Those encountering it for the first time have almost no time to respond.

The Human Seed Bag becomes a classic treasure whose danger can be avoided only by recognizing it in advance.

Maitreya Subdues Yellow Brows

Maitreya finally descends in person and explains that Yellow Brows was his cymbal attendant. The bag belongs to Maitreya and was stolen. Yellow Brows is recovered and the treasure returns to its owner.

CG Visual Language

CG should not redesign the Human Seed Bag as a jeweled treasure pouch. The novel’s humor and force lie in its being an ordinary white cloth bag.

Visual priorities:

  • white or pale cloth
  • soft and foldable material
  • a plain exterior
  • powerful suction when opened
  • the ability to draw in people, weapons, and whole groups of divine warriors

The more ordinary it appears, the stronger the contrast with its extraordinary power.
