Four Merit Officers

四值功曹

The Four Merit Officers are a recurring group of heavenly functionaries in Journey to the West. They belong to the celestial support network surrounding the pilgrimage and should be treated as a collective office rather than as one person.

Four Cycles of Duty

The group is organized around the four values of year, month, day, and hour. This time-based structure explains the number four without requiring four invented character biographies.

Messengers and Support

They appear in duties of attendance, communication, observation, and assistance. Their narrative value lies in showing that heavenly support for the pilgrimage operates through a network of offices as well as through famous individual gods.

A Group Subject

The novel does not give every member enough independent action for separate CG identities. This Subject therefore records the shared office and leaves individual pages uncreated until stronger evidence exists.
