The Nine-Spirit Lion, honored by the demons as the Nine-Spirit Primal Sage, is the ancestral ruler behind the lion clan of Bamboo Joint Mountain in Journey to the West. He enters the story after the Yellow Lion Demon steals weapons from Sun Wukong’s party and is defeated at Yuhua Prefecture. The younger lions call on their powerful ancestor, turning a local theft into a confrontation with a being whose authority reaches across generations of spirits.
His nine heads are not merely a strange form. They strike in several directions and seize opponents almost simultaneously. In the renewed battle he captures members of the pilgrimage party and the princes of Yuhua, then holds them in his cave. Sun Wukong can escape the first rush, but ordinary counterattacks do not settle the struggle. A local deity finally explains that this creature is the mount of Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun, and Wukong travels to the eastern celestial palace to ask for help.
The heavenly master reveals that the lion escaped only because its keeper became drunk and neglected his duty. He also describes a roar powerful enough to reach the highest sages and the deepest regions below, while noting that the beast is not naturally driven to slaughter. When Taiyi Jiuku Tianzun appears, the great demon’s rebellion ends at once and he is taken home. The episode makes the Nine-Spirit Lion one of the late journey’s most formidable opponents: not a hungry roadside monster, but an ancient celestial beast whose family loyalty draws him into conflict and whose true master must personally reclaim him.
