Pang De
Overview
Pang De, courtesy name Lingming, began his career under the Xiliang warlords Ma Teng and Ma Chao and is believed to have been a formidable warrior with a background connected to the Western Regions. After Ma Chao’s defeat, Pang De entered the service of Cao Cao, becoming renowned for his martial prowess, fierce resolve, and unwavering loyalty. In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his most celebrated episode comes during the campaign at Xiangfan, when he sets out with his own coffin as a declaration that he intends either to defeat Guan Yu or die in battle. Pang De later wounds Guan Yu with an arrow and fights him to a standstill, but is ultimately captured after the flooding of the Seven Armies. Refusing Guan Yu’s offer to surrender, he chooses death instead. His dramatic image as the warrior who “carried his coffin into battle” made Pang De one of the outstanding fierce generals to emerge in the later chapters of the novel.
