Ma Chao, courtesy name Mengqi, was a celebrated warrior of the late Han and Three Kingdoms period. Born into a prominent military family of Liangzhou, he became renowned for his extraordinary courage and martial prowess in the northwest. He once led the allied forces of the Guanzhong warlords against Cao Cao, posing a serious threat to Cao’s army, and later entered the service of Liu Bei to become an important general of Shu Han. Fiction and popular tradition further transformed him into the handsome and valiant “Ma Chao the Splendid,” charging on horseback with spear in hand. In later art and literature, he became an archetype of the youthful, magnificent, and fiercely heroic warrior of the northwest.
