Zhao Yun

Overview

Zhao Yun, courtesy name Zilong, was a celebrated general of Shu Han from Zhending in Changshan. Renowned for his courage, loyalty, and composure, he first served Gongsun Zan before joining Liu Bei and campaigning extensively on his behalf. In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhao Yun achieves legendary status at the Battle of Changban, where he charges alone through Cao Cao’s army and rescues Liu Bei’s infant son. Later literature and art established his iconic image as a handsome warrior in white robes and silver armor, charging on horseback with spear in hand. Combining formidable martial prowess with an elegant and disciplined bearing, Zhao Yun became one of the most enduring heroic figures of the Three Kingdoms tradition.
