Ao Guang is one of the best-known Dragon Kings in Chinese mythology and literature, commonly identified as the Dragon King of the Eastern Sea and ruler of the aquatic beings and palaces beneath his domain.
In stories associated with Investiture of the Gods, Nezha comes into conflict with the dragon court near the sea and kills Ao Guang’s son Ao Bing. Ao Guang then seeks accountability from Nezha’s family, causing the conflict between the young warrior and the dragon clan to escalate.
In Journey to the West, Ao Guang also intersects with the story of Sun Wukong. When the Monkey King searches for a weapon worthy of his strength, he enters the Eastern Sea Dragon Palace and ultimately obtains the staff that becomes his famous Ruyi Jingu Bang.
Ao Guang’s primary cultural identity is that of a Dragon King and ruler of the waters rather than a conventional armored battlefield warrior. Within Celestial Generals, he functions naturally as a Person Subject connecting Nezha, Ao Bing, Sun Wukong, and the wider dragon-palace narrative.
