Death-to-Deity Transformation is one of the most distinctive legendary patterns in Investiture of the Gods: when a character dies on the battlefield, the story does not necessarily end. Death may instead become the doorway into another identity.
Many famous figures fall during the war between Shang and Zhou.
Some are great warriors killed in battle.
Some are immortals defeated in supernatural combat.
Some fall to magical treasures.
Others die within deadly formations.
They come from different factions and may even have been bitter enemies.
Yet as the work of Investiture approaches, these deaths begin to reveal another meaning.
The souls of many fallen figures ultimately enter the Investiture process and receive new divine offices when Jiang Ziya carries out the final ceremony.
A character’s legend can therefore have two strikingly different lives.
In the first, the figure is still a general, adept, immortal disciple, or supernatural warrior on the battlefield, surrounded by masters, enemies, treasures, friendships, and grudges.
Then comes death.
But beyond that death, the same figure may return under a new divine name and enter the celestial order.
This transformation helps explain why Investiture of the Gods is such an important narrative source for Celestial Generals.
Many figures later encountered as deities can be followed backward through the Investiture story to an earlier legendary life before their divine office.
Death-to-Deity Transformation is therefore not an abstract religious theory.
It is more like a doorway.
A character walks toward it from the battlefield, passes through death, and emerges on the other side with a new identity as a deity.
For the Celestial Generals relationship network, this also means that death is not necessarily the end of a character’s connections. It may be the beginning of that character’s Deity story.
