In Investiture of the Gods, a divine office is often the next stage in the legendary fate of a figure who has died during the great war.
Generals, adepts, immortals, and supernatural warriors fall one after another as the conflict between Shang and Zhou expands.
At first, death appears to remove them from the story.
But as the Investiture approaches, death becomes the beginning of another identity.
After the war, Jiang Ziya carries out the Investiture according to the Investiture List.
Many of the fallen receive new divine positions.
Some become stellar deities. Some enter celestial departments associated with thunder, fire, or other divine functions. Others receive different places within the heavenly order.
This produces one of the most fascinating reversals in the entire novel.
A character’s allegiance in life does not simply determine whether that figure can become a deity after death.
Some fought for Xiqi.
Others died defending Shang.
Some were allies of Jiang Ziya.
Others had once tried to kill him.
Yet at the Investiture, figures from opposing sides may all receive divine offices.
For Celestial Generals, the idea of Divine Offices is therefore not primarily an abstract study of heavenly bureaucracy.
Its real value lies in character fate.
A dead general may become a divine warrior. A defeated adept may receive a new divine name. Even someone introduced as an enemy may reappear after death within the world of the gods.
The divine office becomes a bridge between a character’s story before death and the identity that follows Investiture.
Within the Celestial Generals network, that bridge is especially important because the same figure may belong simultaneously to a legendary battlefield story and to the later divine world.
