The Eighty-One Ordeals are the completed trial structure of the pilgrimage in Journey to the West. They turn a long road of separate dangers into a religious and narrative whole governed by the number nine times nine.
Chapter 99 presents the ordeal register and finds that Tang Seng has undergone only eighty trials. Guanyin says that Buddhist completion requires nine times nine, so the pilgrims are returned to earth for one final disaster at the river. Completion is therefore achieved through the last ordeal, not by simply reaching the scriptures.
The system belongs to the entire pilgrimage company. It measures perseverance and maturation rather than game difficulty, and the listed trials are editorially organized events whose boundaries need not be forced onto every chapter. The final count gives suffering a designed place within the journey’s meaning.
