Feng Lin

风林

Feng Lin is Zhang Guifang’s vanguard during the Western Qi campaign in Investiture of the Gods. He rides with paired wolf-tooth clubs and carries a stranger weapon within his mouth: a red bead whose sudden flight can decide a duel before an opponent understands the danger. As Zhang Guifang’s front-line officer, he is the first of the pair to test Jiang Ziya’s newly gathered commanders.

Against Ji Shugan, Feng Lin fights for more than thirty bouts without yielding. He then opens his mouth, releases the red bead, and strikes Ji Shugan dead. The victory establishes him as a dangerous magical warrior, though not among the novel’s highest immortals. Nezha soon provides the limit. Protected by a lotus body and armed with superior treasures, Nezha withstands the trick, wounds Feng Lin, and forces the Shang officer from the field. The Four Saints of Nine Dragon Island later heal him so that he can return to Zhang Guifang’s army.

Feng Lin’s final appearance comes when Huang Tianxiang confronts him in the renewed fighting. This time the vanguard has no chance to rebuild the earlier surprise: Huang Tianxiang drives a spear into him and kills him in battle. When Jiang Ziya later opens the divine register, Feng Lin is invested as the Diaoke Star. His compact career has a clear rise and fall—victory through a concealed supernatural strike, exposure against Nezha, recovery through Jie Sect aid, and an ordinary battlefield death before his name is transferred into the celestial order.
