The Fiery Golden Eyes are among Sun Wukong’s most famous supernatural abilities, but they are not a skill he deliberately sets out to learn. They emerge unexpectedly from his ordeal inside Taishang Laojun’s Eight-Trigram Furnace.
After Sun Wukong’s rebellion in Heaven, the celestial authorities finally capture him. Blades, axes, thunder, and fire fail to destroy him, so Taishang Laojun places the Monkey King inside his divine furnace and attempts to refine him away.
Sun Wukong survives inside for forty-nine days. When the furnace is opened, he bursts out alive rather than being reduced to ashes. His eyes have changed during the ordeal, giving him the ability to see through many demonic transformations and supernatural disguises.
The power is not without a weakness. The smoke of the furnace leaves Sun Wukong’s eyes painfully sensitive, and heavy smoke can still make them water and trouble him.
During the pilgrimage, the Fiery Golden Eyes repeatedly allow Sun Wukong to recognize danger before Tang Seng, Zhu Bajie, or Sha Heshang understands what is happening. One of the most famous examples comes when the White Bone Demon approaches in human disguises. Others are deceived by appearances, but Sun Wukong sees the demonic presence behind them.
That ability can create trouble of its own. Sun Wukong may know that a monster is standing in front of him, but Tang Seng does not necessarily believe what his disciple sees. The power that helps the Monkey King defeat demons therefore also becomes a source of conflict between master and disciple.
The great irony of the Fiery Golden Eyes is central to their appeal. They are born from an attempt to destroy Sun Wukong, yet become one of his signature powers. They allow him to see through deception, but they cannot force others to believe the truth he sees.
