Gold Horned King rules Lotus Cave at Pingding Mountain with Silver Horned King in Journey to the West. The brothers learn the identities and abilities of Tang Sanzang’s disciples before they strike, then separate the travelers and try to turn Sun Wukong’s confidence against him. Their purpose is to eat the monk, but their danger comes from an arsenal far beyond ordinary mountain demons: treasures removed from the palace of Taishang Laojun.
The household’s weapons include the Seven-Star Sword, the Purple-Gold Red Gourd, the Jade Purifying Bottle, the Golden Rope, and the Plantain Fan. The gourd and bottle can draw in anyone who answers when called by name; the rope binds its victim; the fan raises terrible fire. Sun Wukong survives by inventing names, changing shape, exchanging real treasures for false ones, and provoking the brothers into mistakes. The struggle repeatedly shifts as each side gains or loses one of the objects.
When Lotus Cave finally falls, Taishang Laojun appears and explains that Gold Horn and Silver Horn were attendants at his furnace. Their descent was tied to a heavenly test of the pilgrimage, and the treasures belonged to their master all along. Laojun calls them back to their original forms and recovers his property. Gold Horned King therefore stands as both a calculating demon ruler and a runaway celestial servant: dangerous not because of a single duel, but because he organizes a complete hunt around stolen divine tools and forces Wukong to win through wit as often as strength.
