The Golden-Tipped Zaoyang Shuo is Shan Xiongxin’s signature weapon in Shuo Tang and one of the arms most closely associated with his character. The novel usually calls it by its full name, Jinding Zaoyang Shuo, though the shorter Zaoyang Shuo also appears. Because shuo refers to a traditional type of long-shafted heavy weapon, the English name retains Shuo rather than reducing it to the more generic “spear.”
Although it belongs to the same broad weapon family as Xin Wenli’s Iron Fang Shuo, the two are not the same weapon. The Golden-Tipped Zaoyang Shuo belongs to Shan Xiongxin, while the Iron Fang Shuo belongs to Xin Wenli, and each carries its own name and association. In the heroic traditions of the Sui–Tang stories, such named weapons often become as much a part of a warrior’s identity as the warrior himself.
