Julingshen

巨灵神

Julingshen, the Giant Spirit God, is the first heavenly vanguard sent against Sun Wukong’s rebellion in chapter 4 of Journey to the West. Under Pagoda-Bearing Heavenly King Li Jing, he advances to Flower-Fruit Mountain before the greater champions of Heaven. He does not arrive as a wandering giant but as an officer carrying the Jade Emperor’s order, demanding that the self-proclaimed Great Sage surrender before the mountain creatures are destroyed with him.

The giant fights with a Xuanhua battle-axe. The battle verse credits the heavenly general with magic that stirs cloud and mist and sends earth and sand across the field. Yet the duel reveals how far Sun Wukong has risen. The golden-hooped staff meets the axe, leaves the vanguard’s whole body numb, and then breaks the axe shaft in two. Julingshen retreats alive only because Wukong deliberately leaves someone to carry the demand for the title Great Sage back to Heaven.

Li Jing treats the failure as a blow to the army’s first momentum and orders the defeated vanguard taken out for execution. Nezha steps forward, asks his father to spare Julingshen temporarily, and requests the next combat. The Giant Spirit God therefore has a small but precise dramatic role: his rank and divine strength establish a credible first test, his defeat proves that ordinary celestial force is no longer enough, and his report moves the conflict upward from a vanguard clash to Nezha and the full machinery of Heaven.
