Mind Monkey and Will Horse

心猿意马

Mind Monkey and Will Horse is a guiding metaphor in Journey to the West for the inner discipline enacted by the pilgrimage. Sun Wukong repeatedly appears in chapter titles as the mind-monkey; the horse and the language of will turn physical travel into a story about directing restless intention.

Early in the journey the mind-monkey must be brought onto the correct path and restrained. By chapter 98 the heading declares the ape mature and the horse tamed as the pilgrims reach realization. The metaphor develops across the novel rather than naming one isolated spell or creature.

The phrase does not reduce Sun Wukong to an abstract symbol or erase the other travelers. It gives a second layer to their concrete adventures: distance, temptation, anger, and return become tests of whether power and desire can be directed toward a sustained purpose.
