The Nine-Ringed Monk’s Staff is Tang Seng’s precious religious staff in Journey to the West. Its ringing metal loops identify the scripture pilgrim through the equipment of a monk rather than through a warrior’s blade.
Chapter 12 brings the staff to the Tang court through Guanyin and her companion. The emperor then bestows it on Xuanzang. When the monk appears carrying it and wearing the treasured cassock, the court and the people recognize an exceptional religious figure.
The staff makes his calling visible before the long journey begins. Its sacred status and nine rings are grounded in the chapter; its significance rests in the mission it accompanies, without needing to become another disciple’s fighting weapon.
