Nine-Toothed Rake

The Nine-Toothed Rake is Zhu Bajie’s characteristic weapon in Journey to the West. Its broad toothed head gives him a silhouette unlike Sun Wukong’s staff or Sha Wujing’s precious staff, while its heavenly origin complicates its homely resemblance to a farm tool.

In chapter 19, Bajie’s account names it the Shangbao Qinjin Rake and describes Lao Jun’s part in its forging and the Jade Emperor’s gift of it when he became Marshal Tianpeng. The weapon preserves the memory of the heavenly officer beneath his earthly, often comic appearance.

Chapter 22 sets the rake against Sha Wujing’s staff at the Flowing-Sand River. Its teeth and sweeping blows belong to serious combat. The familiar rake shape makes Bajie immediately recognizable, but the story establishes it as a divine weapon rather than ordinary agricultural equipment.
