The Phoenix-Winged Gilded Tang is the traditional full name associated with Yuwen Chengdu’s weapon in later Sui-Tang heroic culture. A tang is a Chinese pole weapon with a central point and projecting side blades. Retaining tang in the name preserves its distinctive weapon identity.
Chapter 17 of Shuo Tang describes Yuwen Chengdu carrying a weapon called 流金鐺. That wording supports the weapon association but does not give the complete later name Phoenix-Winged Gilded Tang. The traditional title and the novel’s actual wording therefore remain separate kinds of evidence.
The weapon expresses Yuwen Chengdu’s identity as a powerful warrior capable of handling a formidable polearm. Phoenix-winged supplies a traditional identifying image; it does not imply flight or supernatural phoenix abilities.
