Queen Mother

王母娘娘

The Queen Mother is one of the highest-ranking female immortals of Heaven in Journey to the West and the central figure behind the Peach Garden and the famous Peach Banquet.

Her celestial garden produces the immortal peaches associated with extraordinary longevity and immortality. When the peaches ripen, the Queen Mother holds a magnificent banquet and invites the great figures of Heaven to attend.

Then Heaven makes the extraordinary decision to place Sun Wukong in charge of the Peach Garden.

After receiving the title Great Sage Equal to Heaven, the Monkey King imagines that he has become an important member of the celestial court.

But when the Queen Mother prepares her Peach Banquet, Sun Wukong is not included among the invited guests.

He learns this from the celestial maidens who come to gather peaches for the feast.

The discovery enrages him.

Sun Wukong has already been helping himself to the immortal peaches. Now he makes his way to the banquet, drinks the heavenly wine, eats the prepared delicacies, and eventually wanders drunkenly into Taishang Laojun’s Tushita Palace, where he consumes the old master’s elixir pills as well.

A grand celestial celebration is transformed into one of the great disasters of Sun Wukong’s rebellion.

The Queen Mother herself does not need to fight the Monkey King with weapons to become central to the story. Her peaches and her banquet stand at the heart of one of the most famous chains of events in Havoc in Heaven.

In later Journey to the West stories, she remains an important figure within the celestial order, while her maidens, immortal peaches, and heavenly gatherings help define the splendor of Heaven.

Within Celestial Generals, the Queen Mother is therefore most important as a legendary figure rather than a subject of religious history: mistress of the Peach Garden, host of the Peach Banquet, and the celestial grande dame whose guest list helps ignite one of Sun Wukong’s greatest rebellions.
