Sun Jian, courtesy name Wentai and celebrated as the Tiger of Jiangdong, is one of the coalition’s most aggressive commanders in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. As governor of Changsha, he volunteers to lead the vanguard against Dong Zhuo and advances on Sishui Pass with Cheng Pu, Huang Gai, Han Dang, and Zu Mao. His men defeat Hua Xiong’s subordinate Hu Zhen and drive to the pass while other lords remain in camp.
His advance is undone from within the alliance. Yuan Shu, responsible for the coalition’s grain, hears that Sun Jian may become a greater danger if Dong Zhuo falls and refuses to send supplies. Hunger disorders the vanguard, and Hua Xiong and Li Su attack the camp by night. Sun Jian breaks out, but Zu Mao takes his red headscarf to draw away pursuit and is killed. Sun Jian later confronts Yuan Shu for causing the defeat. After Guan Yu kills Hua Xiong and Dong Zhuo abandons Luoyang, Sun Jian enters the ruined capital at the head of the advancing coalition forces.
In Luoyang, Sun Jian’s soldiers recover the Imperial Seal from a palace well. He conceals it and prepares to return south, leading to an open quarrel with Yuan Shao. Yuan Shao urges Liu Biao to intercept him, beginning the enmity that shapes Sun Jian’s last campaign. Later, encouraged by Yuan Shu but also seeking revenge, Sun Jian attacks Liu Biao’s territory around Xiangyang.
Sun Jian wins several encounters but pursues Lü Gong into the wooded slopes of Xian Mountain with too few followers. Hidden troops release stones and arrows; Sun Jian is struck and killed with his horse. His sons Sun Ce and Sun Quan inherit the cause that becomes the power of Eastern Wu. From the vanguard at Sishui Pass to the Imperial Seal and his fatal southern campaign, Sun Jian’s story joins battlefield courage to the rivalries that break the coalition apart.
