The Tightening Headband is the restraint worn by Sun Wukong in Journey to the West. Tang Seng’s recitation makes it tighten painfully, giving the physically vulnerable master a means of checking his powerful disciple.
In chapter 14, Guanyin supplies clothing and a cap along with the secret recitation. Wukong puts on the cap and discovers that the band cannot be pulled away. The encounter binds extraordinary force to the discipline demanded by the pilgrimage.
The headband defines the relationship between wearer and reciter, so both Wukong and Tang Seng belong to its story. It is distinct from the iron staff despite their shared golden imagery, and from the other bands Guanyin carries.
