The Tilu Spear is Shang Shitu’s signature weapon in Sui-Tang Romance. Its literary name is retained as a proper name rather than replaced by a generic spear category.
Shang Shitu’s Signature Weapon
The spear forms one half of Shang Shitu’s distinctive battlefield identity, paired with his mount Hulei Bao. Together they make him recognizable before any detailed armor or costume is added.
A Literary Weapon Name
Tilu Spear preserves the compact name used by the narrative. The surviving name does not by itself establish a single mechanical construction, so CG should not invent a furnace, hook, chamber, or other special mechanism without supporting evidence.
Battlefield Role
As a mounted general’s primary long weapon, the spear extends Shang Shitu’s reach and supports a direct cavalry silhouette. Its importance lies in the connection between bearer, weapon, and mount rather than in treating it as an example of every Chinese spear.
