Wind-Borne Hearing

What Does Shunfenger Hear?

Wind-Borne Hearing is not merely better-than-average hearing. It is a legendary faculty that transcends the spatial limits of ordinary sound. For most people, voices fade with distance and disappear behind terrain and obstruction. Shunfenger can hear speech and activity from impossibly remote places. The image of favorable wind suggests sound crossing vast space to reach him, but the story does not need to reduce the power to ordinary acoustics.

When Distance No Longer Seals Away Sound

For an ordinary observer, a place that can be neither seen nor heard remains inaccessible as information. Shunfenger breaks the auditory half of that barrier. Without being nearby, he can know what is being said and what activity is taking place far away. The legendary effect lies not in the shape of his ears, but in making an otherwise unreachable sound available as clear intelligence.

Distant Military Activity Can Be Heard

Investiture of the Gods pairs Shunfenger with Qianliyan and distinguishes hearing distant military information from seeing it. Through far-off voices and movement, Shunfenger gathers clues about speech and action that distance would normally conceal. Others must wait for a messenger or travel to the scene; he can learn of change through sound before either is possible.

One Hears and One Sees

Qianliyan makes the remote visible; Shunfenger makes it audible. When they appear together, sight and hearing complement one another without becoming one undifferentiated power. His name itself identifies the far-hearing faculty that defines him. Even within the pair, Shunfenger's own story remains centered on the ability to remove the inaccessibility of distant sound.
