Yuan Shao, courtesy name Benchu, is one of the major regional lords of the late Eastern Han in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Born into the powerful Yuan clan of Runan, he possesses enormous prestige during the early struggle among the warlords.
After Dong Zhuo seizes control of the imperial court, regional lords form a coalition against him and choose Yuan Shao as their leader. Figures such as Cao Cao and Sun Jian participate within this wider alliance.
Following Dong Zhuo’s fall, Yuan Shao gradually gains control over the northern territories and becomes one of the strongest warlords in China. His rivalry with Cao Cao eventually develops into the Battle of Guandu, a decisive struggle for control of the north.
Despite possessing greater manpower and resources, Yuan Shao is defeated by Cao Cao at Guandu. His political and military power subsequently declines, allowing Cao Cao to establish dominance across northern China.
Yuan Shao is not primarily remembered as a front-line champion, but he is an essential narrative figure connecting Dong Zhuo, Cao Cao, and the coalition politics of the late Han. He therefore functions naturally as an important Person Subject within the Three Kingdoms network.
