Zhenwu Dadi, also known as Zhenwu and the Dark Heaven Supreme Emperor, is one of the most influential martial and protective divinities in the Chinese Daoist tradition. He is strongly associated with the north, the imagery of the Black Tortoise, and divine power used to suppress demons and harmful forces. His cult became especially prominent from the Ming period onward.
His traditional appearance carries a powerful martial identity. Zhenwu is often represented with loose hair and bare feet, wearing armor or martial robes and carrying a sword. A tortoise and snake beneath his feet connect him to the symbolism of Xuanwu and form one of the most recognizable elements of his visual tradition.
In temple sculpture, Water-and-Land paintings, and other forms of religious art, Zhenwu frequently appears as a commanding but composed divine warrior. His role combines authority over the northern direction with the suppression of evil and the protection of communities and the state.
