Overview

Huaguang Dadi, also known as Marshal Ma, Ma Lingguan, and the Three-Eyed Divine Light, is an important guardian and fire deity in Chinese Daoist and popular religion. His most distinctive feature is the third eye on his forehead, and he is commonly portrayed as an armored divine warrior charged with suppressing demons, protecting temples, and watching over good and evil. Within Daoist traditions he belongs to the ranks of powerful guardian marshals, while in popular worship he has also been revered by performers, theatrical communities, and various trades, with his divine power closely associated with fire, radiant light, and the expulsion of harmful spirits. His mythology is developed most fully in the Ming-dynasty novel Journey to the South. After undergoing a series of incarnations, he emerges as the three-eyed Huaguang, wielding magical weapons such as his golden brick and fighting demons and supernatural adversaries across the realms. A major part of his journey is driven by his search for his abducted mother, leading him through battles with spirits and gods before he ultimately returns to the righteous path and assumes his role as a powerful divine guardian. His third eye, fiery nature, martial armor, and demon-subduing powers together define the character of Huaguang Dadi.
