Jiang Menshen, whose personal name is Jiang Zhong, is the powerful bully who takes over the Happy Grove tavern in Water Margin. Backed by Inspector Zhang, he beats Shi En and seizes the profitable inn and market. His nickname, the Door God, suits a very large man known for wrestling strength and for using official protection to control local business.
Shi En asks the imprisoned Wu Song to recover Happy Grove. Wu Song insists on drinking at every tavern along the road, arrives apparently drunk, provokes Jiang’s household, and then uses sudden close-range kicks and blows to defeat him. With Jiang pinned to the ground, Wu Song demands that he return the property, apologize publicly to Shi En, and leave Mengzhou.
Jiang Menshen does not accept the humiliation. He joins Inspector Zhang and Commandant Zhang in a plan that welcomes Wu Song into the household, falsely accuses him of theft, and sends killers to finish him at Flying Cloud Pool. Wu Song survives the ambush and returns to Mandarin Duck Tower. There he finds the conspirators celebrating and kills Jiang Menshen with the others. Jiang’s heavy build, tavern setting, barehanded strength, and dependence on official patrons make him a physical threat whose power collapses twice before Wu Song.
