The Three-Cornered Golden Brick is Huaguang’s striking treasure in Journey to the South. Its compact, solid form distinguishes it from a long battlefield weapon: Huaguang throws it to break an opponent’s pursuit or turn a close contest in his favour.
In the third volume, during the conflict with the heavenly forces led by Nezha, Huaguang feigns retreat and casts the brick at the pursuing One-Horned Reverse-Scaled Dragon. The blow strikes the pursuer’s horn and forces him back. The episode gives direct narrative proof of the named treasure and its use.
The golden brick is a strong marker of Huaguang within this particular literary tradition. Its value comes from a recognizable object made formidable through the hero’s actions. The novel’s three-cornered name can be retained without adding unsupported inscriptions, dimensions, or a fixed decorative design.
