Three Volumes of Heavenly Books

三卷天书

The Three Volumes of Heavenly Books are the sacred writings given to Song Jiang by the Nine Heavens Mysterious Maiden in Water Margin. They make heavenly instruction part of his authority, while their secrecy places a moral burden on the person who receives them.

Chapter 42 has the goddess command Song Jiang to act for Heaven, protect the people, and assist the state. She gives him three scrolls and orders him to study them with a loyal companion, warning him against showing them to the wrong person. The gift combines military guidance with standards for conduct.

The books matter as a compact sign of mandate, knowledge, and responsibility. Their contents need not be invented page by page: the story defines them through who may read them, what duties accompany them, and how they help frame Song Jiang as more than a successful bandit leader.
