Song Jiang
Overview
Song Jiang is the central figure of Water Margin and the leader of the Liangshan heroes, best known by the nicknames “Timely Rain” and “Protector of Righteousness.” He is not distinguished primarily by personal martial prowess; instead, his extraordinary reputation in the martial world, skill in dealing with people, and organizational ability allow him to unite 108 heroes of radically different backgrounds and temperaments under the banner of Liangshan. Song Jiang combines generosity and loyalty to friends with a remarkable ability to win allegiance, yet he remains deeply committed to loyalty toward the imperial order and the pursuit of official amnesty. He leads Liangshan to accept the court’s offer of amnesty and subsequently commands its heroes in a series of campaigns. Thus Song Jiang is both the central figure in Liangshan’s rise to its greatest power and the leader whose choices ultimately guide it toward tragedy, making him one of the most important and controversial characters in the novel.
