The Sun Needles are Gao Lanying’s most distinctive treasure in Investiture of the Gods and the weapon that enables her to kill Deng Chanyu.
They are not ordinary needle-shaped projectiles, but a set of forty-nine divine needles kept inside a red gourd.
When Gao Lanying uses them, the needles do not kill by themselves. They strike the opponent’s eyes, taking away their sight so that Gao can close in and finish the fight.
Forty-Nine Divine Needles
In Gao Lanying’s second fight with Deng Chanyu, she opens the red gourd to avenge the earlier blow from the Five-Light Stone.
Forty-nine Sun Needles fly from the vessel and strike at Deng Chanyu’s eyes.
Unable to see, Deng Chanyu is vulnerable. Gao Lanying urges her horse forward and kills her with a blade.
The treasure’s characteristic attack sequence is therefore:
needles blind the target → the target loses sight → Gao Lanying closes in for the kill.
A Counterpart to the Five-Light Stone
Deng Chanyu’s best-known weapon is the Five-Light Stone. Gao Lanying is struck in the face by it during their first encounter.
The Sun Needles later answer that attack by striking Deng Chanyu’s eyes.
The two female warriors form a clear visual pairing:
Deng Chanyu → Five-Light Stone
Gao Lanying → Sun Needles
The two unusual ranged weapons ultimately decide the course of their battle.

The visual focus is not one isolated needle. It is a dense burst of fine needles erupting from the gourd.
