Gao Lanying

高兰英

Gao Lanying is Zhang Kui’s wife and military partner in the defense of Mianchi in Investiture of the Gods. She arrives mounted on a peach-blossom horse with twin sabers, joining a husband already feared for swift movement above and below the earth. Her judgment matters inside the command household: she advises night infiltration when open battle fails and later urges a guarded defense while they wait for aid from the Shang capital.

Her defining opponent is Deng Chanyu. The two women fight for twenty bouts before Deng feigns retreat and strikes Gao Lanying in the face with a Five-Light Stone. Gao later takes revenge with the treasure carried in her red gourd. Forty-nine Sun Needles fly into Deng Chanyu’s eyes, blind her, and allow Gao to cut her down. Jiang Ziya treats the needles as a serious danger and temporarily halts direct attacks on the small city.

Gao Lanying and Zhang Kui hold Mianchi through two days of assault after killing several prominent Zhou commanders between them. When Jiang Ziya finally draws Zhang Kui away, Nezha enters the city from above while Leizhenzi breaks open the defenses. Gao rides out to meet Nezha, but before she can release the Sun Needles, his Universe Ring strikes her from the saddle and his spear kills her. She falls as a defender beside her husband’s cause, not as a passive consort, and the novel’s verse praises her loyalty even while placing her on the doomed Shang side.
