The Heng and Ha Generals are the paired guardian figures formed by Zheng Lun and Chen Qi in Investiture of the Gods.
During their mortal lives they serve opposing sides, yet their powers and combat identities mirror one another. After investiture they become guardian generals who stand together at the mountain gate.
Zheng Lun: General Heng
Zheng Lun’s power comes from his nose.
With a single “Heng,” two beams of white light burst from his nostrils. The enemy’s soul is shaken and the rider falls from the saddle. Zheng Lun’s Crow Soldiers then use hooks and ropes to capture the fallen opponent.
Chen Qi: General Ha
Chen Qi’s power comes from his mouth.
With a single “Ha,” yellow vapor pours out. The enemy’s soul is likewise shaken and the rider falls from the horse. Chen Qi’s Flying Tiger Soldiers then make the capture.
Heng Meets Ha
When Zheng Lun and Chen Qi fight each other, both activate their powers at the same moment.
White light and yellow vapor appear together, and both generals fall from their mounts. This encounter establishes the mirrored form of the later Heng and Ha pair.
Warriors Before Gods of Power
In their second encounter, the two even agree to set aside their powers and decide the fight with weapons alone.
Both ride Golden-Eyed Beasts and fight at length with pestle weapons. They are warriors first, and extraordinary adepts second.
Investiture
After investiture, Zheng Lun and Chen Qi become the gods known as the Heng and Ha Generals. Their duties include guarding the mountain gate, proclaiming religious teaching, and protecting sacred treasures.
This office later develops into a highly recognizable tradition of temple guardians.
