Liang Shitai

梁师泰

Liang Shitai is the hammer-wielding lord of Guachui Manor in the Sui-Tang storytelling tradition. He meets Li Yuanba on the road and tests strength with the nearly invincible prince. Liang cannot match that overwhelming power, but he shows enough courage and ability to win respect rather than contempt. Li Yuanba accepts him as a road-opening general, giving the manor warrior a place in the train of the foremost strongman of the age.

His duty becomes fatal on the approach to the great martial gathering at Yangzhou. Liang Shitai rides ahead to demand passage and encounters Wu Tianxi, who guards the entrance with a Mixed-Gold Tang. Neither man yields the road. Liang raises his paired hammers against the descending blows, but the first shocks both arms, the second breaks his balance, and the third strikes him down. The exchange is brief because Wu Tianxi stands among the highest-ranked champions, not because Liang lacks nerve.

Li Yuanba sees his vanguard killed and immediately charges. Wu Tianxi recognizes the prince and tries to let him pass, but Li Yuanba refuses mercy for the man who has slain his follower. He overpowers and tears Wu Tianxi apart. Liang Shitai’s death therefore changes more than one contest at a gate: it turns a dispute over entry into a chain of vengeance that removes another celebrated hero before the tournament begins. His lasting role is that of the capable warrior whose loyalty draws Li Yuanba into personal revenge.
