Nanji Xianweng is a senior immortal of the Chan teaching at Yuxu Palace on Mount Kunlun. He serves close to Yuanshi Tianzun and repeatedly carries out his master’s instructions. When Jiang Ziya returns to Kunlun during the early campaign, Nanji conveys Yuanshi’s decisions and helps send him back to the human world with the authority and implements needed to continue the investiture mission.
His most direct battlefield action comes at the Red Sand Formation. Nanji enters the formation with White Crane Boy, uses the Five-Fire Seven-Feather Fan to scatter the deadly red sand, and rescues King Wu, Nezha, and Leizhenzi from the pits inside. White Crane Boy fights beside him and kills the formation master Zhang Shao with the Three-Treasure Jade Ruyi.
Nanji’s role is therefore broader than that of a secluded elder. He delivers commands, intervenes when Chan disciples are in danger, and handles affairs that require Yuanshi Tianzun’s trusted representative. His partnership with White Crane Boy and his rescue at the Red Sand Formation give him a distinct place among the immortals supporting Jiang Ziya.
