Yuanshi Tianzun is the lord of Yuxu Palace on Mount Kunlun and the teacher above the Chan immortals in Investiture of the Gods. He gives Jiang Ziya the Investiture List and sends him down the mountain to assist Zhou, making Yuanshi the authority behind both the political mission and the ordering of the future gods. Senior disciples such as Nanji Xianweng and the Twelve Golden Immortals act under his commands.
When the Nine-Bend Yellow River Formation strips his disciples of their cultivation, Yuanshi descends with Laozi. He enters the formation, defeats the Three Xiao sisters with the Pangu Banner and other divine means, and restores the captured immortals. Later he joins Laozi, Jieyin, and Zhunti to break Tongtian Jiaozhu’s Immortal-Execution Formation, assigning the four swords to his disciples after the formation falls.
Yuanshi’s authority is not absolute: after the Myriad Immortals Formation, he and the other two brothers kneel before their master Hongjun Daoren and accept the pill that forbids renewed conflict. His role joins teacher, planner, treasure-holder, and active combatant at the moments when the Chan side can no longer proceed without its leader.
