The Shoulder Swallow (吞肩), also known as the Beast-Head Shoulder Guard (吞肩兽), is one of the most distinctive elements found in Chinese armor.
Its mature form first appeared during the Tang dynasty. The design is immediately recognizable: the wearer’s arm emerges from the open mouth of a large beast head, creating the impression that a mythical creature is resting upon the shoulder.
Originally developed as an additional form of shoulder protection, the Shoulder Swallow gradually evolved into a highly decorative and symbolic feature. Dragon heads are the most common form, though countless variations exist. Fierce, majestic, grotesque, or elegant, the expressions of these creatures vary dramatically from one example to another.
