Black Bear Demon

黑熊精

The Black Bear Demon rules Black Wind Cave near Guanyin Monastery in Journey to the West. He is already acquainted with Elder Jinchi and visits the burning monastery when the old monk’s scheme turns disastrous. Amid the fire he sees Tang Sanzang’s magnificent kasaya. Instead of helping the monks, he steals the robe and carries it home, then announces a Buddha-Robes Gathering so neighboring spirits can admire the treasure on his birthday.

Sun Wukong traces the theft to Black Wind Mountain and challenges him repeatedly. The bear fights with a black-tasseled spear and enough strength to sustain long exchanges without a decisive defeat. He withdraws when he chooses, closes his cave against assault, and does not collapse before the Monkey King’s reputation. The episode therefore treats him as a powerful local lord with cultivated tastes and social ties, not a mindless beast. His vanity over the kasaya, however, gives Wukong and Guanyin the opening they need.

Guanyin disguises herself as the snake spirit Lingxuzi and offers the bear an elixir, while Sun Wukong transforms into the pill. Once swallowed, Wukong attacks from inside and Guanyin reveals herself. Unable to endure the pain or escape her command, the Black Bear Demon returns the robe and accepts the precepts. He is not destroyed: Guanyin recognizes his strength and takes him to Mount Luojia as a guardian. Theft begins his fall, but conversion turns the same formidable body into protection for a sacred place.
