Guanyin is one of the most important bodhisattva figures in Chinese Buddhism and literary tradition. In Journey to the West, she is especially closely connected with the pilgrimage of Tang Seng and the fate of Sun Wukong.
Before the pilgrimage begins, Guanyin travels to the eastern lands in search of a suitable scripture pilgrim and helps establish Tang Seng’s mission to journey west. She also plays an important role in bringing together the companions who will accompany him.
After Sun Wukong has spent years imprisoned beneath the Five Elements Mountain, Guanyin arranges for him to become Tang Seng’s senior disciple. During the journey, she repeatedly intervenes when the pilgrims encounter demons, magical treasures, or supernatural problems beyond their ability to resolve alone.
Red Boy, after coming into conflict with Sun Wukong and the pilgrims, is ultimately subdued by Guanyin and becomes the Child of Wealth. Figures such as Mu Zha also belong to the wider network of attendants and protectors associated with her.
Guanyin’s central cultural identity is that of a compassionate bodhisattva rather than an armored battlefield warrior. Within Celestial Generals, she functions naturally as a major Person Subject connecting Tang Seng, Sun Wukong, Red Boy, Mu Zha, and the wider pilgrimage network.
