Chen Tong

陈桐

Chen Tong is the Shang commander guarding Tong Pass when Huang Feihu and his household flee the capital in Investiture of the Gods. The pass is one of the barriers between the fugitives and Xiqi, and Chen Tong treats their departure as rebellion. He rides out with a halberd, but his decisive weapon is the Fire-Dragon Dart, a hidden treasure that bursts with heat and smoke when cast.

In the first clash the dart strikes Huang Feihu and knocks him from the Five-Colored Divine Ox. The escaping party manages to preserve him, yet Chen Tong’s advantage remains; Zhou Ji is also hit when he tries to fight through. The crisis brings Huang Tianhua down from the mountains to rescue his father. In their rematch Chen Tong again relies on the dart after a mounted exchange, expecting the same sudden victory.

Huang Tianhua is prepared. He receives the Fire-Dragon Dart in his flower basket, stripping Chen Tong of the surprise on which his success depends, then releases the Moye Sword and kills him. Chen Tong’s part is brief but structurally important. He makes Tong Pass a true danger, brings Huang Feihu close to death, and gives Huang Tianhua his first urgent intervention in the family story. His strength lies in the abrupt change from conventional weapon fighting to a concealed fiery missile; his fall comes when that single advantage meets a purpose-made answer.
