Diao Chan

貂蝉

Diao Chan is one of the most recognizable female characters in Romance of the Three Kingdoms and is closely associated with Wang Yun’s plot to divide Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu.

After Dong Zhuo gains control of the imperial court, his power becomes extremely difficult to challenge through ordinary political means. Wang Yun therefore develops a plan that exploits the complicated personal relationship between Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu.

Diao Chan becomes the key figure in this strategy. Wang Yun causes both Dong Zhuo and Lü Bu to become emotionally attached to her, steadily increasing jealousy and distrust between the two men.

As the conflict deepens, Lü Bu eventually breaks completely with Dong Zhuo and personally kills him. Diao Chan thus becomes one of the central figures driving a major turning point in the political struggle of the late Han.

She is not a martial warrior, but her connections with Lü Bu and Dong Zhuo create one of the strongest personal relationship networks in the novel. Within Celestial Generals, she functions naturally as a Person Subject providing context for Lü Bu’s story and the political conflicts surrounding Dong Zhuo.
