Ding Yanping

定彦平

Ding Yanping is the veteran double-spear master of later Sui–Tang storytelling. Usually presented as an older general and an adoptive elder of Luo Cheng, he fights with a spear in each hand. The paired weapons let him attack before and after two riders cross, using balance, timing, and changes of direction rather than the crushing force associated with hammer champions.

His central story turns on trust and martial knowledge. Luo Cheng approaches the old general while concealing that he may later face him in battle. Ding Yanping explains how a single spear can survive and break the double-spear method, believing he is instructing a younger relative rather than arming an enemy. When the two eventually meet across opposing lines, Luo Cheng uses the disclosed counter against him.

The defeat wounds Ding Yanping more deeply as betrayal than as an ordinary loss. Versions differ on whether he withdraws, enters religious life, or reaches another ending, but they agree that the old master’s own lesson makes the result possible. His age, controlled riding posture, and two coordinated spears therefore carry both technical skill and the disappointment of a teacher whose confidence was misused.
