Erlang Shen
Overview
杨戬，又称二郎神，是中国神话中最著名的神将之一。在《封神演义》中，他是玉泉山金霞洞玉鼎真人的弟子，修成八九玄功，精通七十二般变化，善于变化形体、隐匿踪迹，并拥有极强的肉身与法术。他奉师命下山辅佐姜子牙伐纣，是西岐阵营最重要的战将之一，曾参与破魔家四将、闻仲、赵公明、三霄娘娘等诸多大战，并多次凭借变化之术深入敌营、识破妖术，在梅山七怪之战中尤其发挥关键作用。封神大战结束后，杨戬肉身成圣，没有进入封神榜受封。 在《西游记》中，二郎神居于灌江口，统领梅山兄弟，并有哮天犬相随。孙悟空大闹天宫时，二郎神奉命出战，与孙悟空展开变化之术与武艺的正面对决，双方从法天象地一直斗到各种飞禽走兽的变化，最终在太上老君与哮天犬协助下擒住孙悟空。后来取经途中孙悟空遭遇九头虫，二郎神又率梅山兄弟出手相助。杨戬因此兼具仙道修行者与天界战神的身份，以八九玄功、变化之术、哮天犬以及卓绝的武艺贯穿《封神演义》和《西游记》两大神魔叙事。
Yang Jian, widely known as Erlang Shen, is one of the most prominent warrior deities in Chinese mythology. In The Investiture of the Gods, he is a disciple of Yuding Zhenren of Jinxia Cave on Mount Yuquan and a master of the Eight-Nine Mysterious Art, which grants him extraordinary transformations, supernatural resilience, and formidable magical abilities. Sent down from the mountain to assist Jiang Ziya in the campaign against the Shang dynasty, Yang Jian becomes one of the most important warriors of the Western Zhou forces. He takes part in numerous major battles against powerful opponents including the Four Generals of the Mo Family, Wen Zhong, Zhao Gongming, the Three Xiao Sisters, and the Seven Monsters of Mount Mei. His mastery of transformation repeatedly allows him to infiltrate enemy positions, overcome magical attacks, and defeat supernatural adversaries. At the conclusion of the war, Yang Jian attains sanctity in his physical body rather than receiving a posthumous appointment through the Investiture of the Gods. In Journey to the West, Erlang Shen resides at the mouth of the Guan River, accompanied by the Brothers of Mount Mei and his divine hound, Xiaotian Quan. During Sun Wukong’s rebellion against Heaven, Erlang is sent to confront him, leading to one of the novel’s most famous contests of martial skill and transformation. The two assume gigantic forms and successively transform into different animals before Sun Wukong is ultimately captured with assistance from Laozi and Erlang’s hound. Later, during the journey to obtain the scriptures, Erlang and his companions assist Sun Wukong in the battle against the Nine-Headed Beast. Across both traditions, Yang Jian is portrayed as an accomplished Daoist immortal and formidable divine warrior, distinguished above all by his Eight-Nine Mysterious Art, mastery of transformation, exceptional martial skill, and his association with Xiaotian Quan.
