Hundred-Eyed Demon Lord

百眼魔君

The Hundred-Eyed Demon Lord is the Daoist master of Yellow Flower Abbey in Journey to the West. The seven spider spirits call him senior brother and seek refuge with him after their clash with the pilgrims. He first receives Tang Sanzang’s party with outward courtesy, then chooses vengeance. Poison is mixed into the tea: Tang Sanzang, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing collapse, while Sun Wukong detects the danger in time and forces the host into open combat.

The demon’s title is proved when he throws back his robe and reveals countless eyes along his ribs. They emit dense golden rays that surround Sun Wukong like a shining enclosure. The Monkey King’s staff cannot simply batter through it; after suffering inside the light, he escapes and must seek instruction. The encounter gives the demon unusual standing among the journey’s adversaries, because his strongest power is neither borrowed treasure nor a captured weapon but an innate defense that compels Wukong to find its exact counter.

That counter is Pilanpo Bodhisattva. Using a small embroidery needle, she pierces the golden radiance and leaves the demon helpless. His true body appears as a seven-foot centipede. Pilanpo explains that only her needle can overcome his thousand-eyed light and claims him for her own dwelling, where he becomes a gate guardian rather than being killed. The episode moves from hospitality to poison, from duel to supernatural siege, and finally to conversion: a dangerous avenger of the spider spirits is absorbed into a higher religious order.
