The Investiture List is the mysterious register at the heart of Investiture of the Gods, an unseen thread of destiny running behind the entire war between Shang and Zhou.
The supernatural order requires a new assignment of divine offices. Yuanshi Tianzun and other great figures of the immortal world prepare for the work of Investiture, and Jiang Ziya is ultimately entrusted with carrying it out.
When Jiang Ziya descends from Kunlun and joins Xiqi, his visible task is to assist the Zhou cause against Shang. Yet as the war grows, more and more generals, immortals, adepts, and extraordinary warriors die on the battlefield.
Their deaths are not always the end of their stories.
Many of the fallen are ultimately connected with the divine offices recorded on the Investiture List.
This gives the war one of its strangest and most memorable qualities. Men and immortals who fight as enemies in life may later stand together within the same celestial order. Some served Xiqi, others remained loyal to Shang. Some came from the Chan lineage, while others were connected with rival supernatural networks.
Once the fighting ends, many of those old divisions are transformed by the work of Investiture.
The List therefore seems to hang invisibly over the entire novel. The warriors themselves may not know what divine office awaits them, but the reader watches battle after battle send more names toward the final ceremony.
After the overthrow of Shang, Jiang Ziya carries out the Investiture. The fallen are called and assigned their divine offices, and figures who once belonged to the world of generals, warriors, and supernatural adepts enter a new celestial order.
The most compelling idea behind the Investiture List is that death can become the beginning of another legend. A warrior may fall on the battlefield without disappearing from the Celestial Generals universe. Instead, he may return with a new divine title and a new place among the gods.
Within Celestial Generals, the Investiture List is therefore more than a magical register. It is a crucial Object Subject connecting mortal or legendary identities before death with the divine identities that emerge after Investiture.
